Shivajisagar (Koyna)

To the south of the Mahabaleshwar the River Koyna and its tributaries the Solishi and Kandati merge to craft the colossal lake by the name Shivajisagar. Almost 51 kilometre-long, Shivsagar lake is probably the largest lake in the country.

Koyana Wildlife Sanctury -
Thick forest dominates the vicinity of the lake and serves as a home to numerous wild animals including elephants and lepords. While it may seem to be an exaggeration, it is true that bears, tigers and deers have been spotted here. The entire area has been declared as a wildlife reserve by the name Koyna.
Koyana Dam -
The dam walls are huge and worth a watch when one catches a glimpse of it while traveling on the road which leads to the lake. These walls have crafted a colossal lake by impeding the waters of Koyna.
Jungli Jaigad fort -
A small pathway through the thick woods leads us to this fort. The fort derives its name from the jungle one has to cross to reach here. The fort commands an awesome view of the Sahyadri mountains.
The Hydroelectricity project -
The waters of the Koyna are secretly flown down a tunnel to Pofli where a hydro electricity plant has been set up to generate electricity. It has been definitely a tough job to divert the water through a tunnel down the Sahyadri mountains. This man made wonder definitely deserves our appreciation.
Navja Ghat -
A ghat route connecting Navja on the Deccan pleatue and Pofli in the Konkan. It is used by government officals only and private vehicles are banned on this road.
Panchdhara Tunnel -
Right below the Jungli Jaigad for is the 500m long tunnel enroute Navja ghat. It is also one of the wonders of the Koyna project.
Rambaan Tirtha -
Near the tunnel a small we see a small directive board on the left indicating towards Rambaan Tirtha. The pathway leads us to a massive rock structure amidst the thick forest. According to a legend Lord Rama during his exile visited here and inorder to quench the thirst of his beloved wife Sita shot an arrow to produce a spring. Locals are of the view that it is the same huge rock which was struck by the arrow.
Nehru Garden -
The beautiful garden has been developed near the Koyna dam which houses a variety of flaura. A typical family outing place and thus a must see,
Waterfall -
During down pour the lot of streams are seen cascading over the cliffs. One such wonderful waterfall is seen on the way to Navja. A right place to get drenched and enjoy the hydro0-massage.
Windmill farm -
On a plateau surrounding the lake numerous wind mills are seen. They are so huge in number that the area is popularly konwn as windmill farm.

Chiplun on the Konkan railway route is the nearest railhead 90 km away.
By Road -
Regular buses ply between Satara and Koyana nagar lake.

PWD Guest house available right beside the project. One can also seek shelter at "The Koyna Lake Retreat" - a MTDC managed guest house.
